Schools Orienteering Championships

Each year the Orienteering Association of Western Australia (OAWA) delivers the WA Schools Orienteering Championships. This event is usually held on a weekday in June and lasts from around 9am to 1pm. There are orienteering courses for students of all ages and abilities. In 2026, OAWA offered the classes and courses described in the tables below.

Individual classes

Individuals complete line courses. This means students must visit their controls in the order depicted on their map.

Schools can use the OE (Outdoor Education) category to assess students for Outdoor Education (Years 11/12 only). We will send schools the course maps for the OE category one week before the event, so students can study their course in class before completing it on the day. We will send the electronic timing results of the OE student’s schools after the event to help in teacher assessments.

Pairs classes

Pairs classes are score events meaning each control has a point value and the pair of students can choose which controls to visit. In 2026, Pairs had 45 minutes to visit up to 20 controls. The pairs that collected the most points in the shortest time won each class.

The 2026 Schools Orienteering Championships

The 2026 Secondary Schools Orienteering Championships were held at Mills Park in Gosnells on Tuesday 23^rd of June. Over 750 students from 19 schools participated. Twenty-six volunteers from OAWA helped run the event and City of Gosnells permitted us to use Mills Park.

This year, we adopted a sprint park format for the championships as these courses are more achievable for students who have only orienteered at their schools. Feedback from the students and their teachers was very positive. The 10 pairs, 11 – 12 pairs, 13 – 15 pairs and 16 pairs ran a score event, and all students had a result which was very pleasing. The vibe when the students mass started was exciting for the students and spectators.

Overall, Quinns Baptist College retained their position as Champion Secondary School with 38 points from Perth Modern with 36 points. Shenton College with third with 29 points. St James Anglican was the Champion Primary School with 69 points from Holy Cross College with 39 points. St Brigids Primary School was third with 19 points.
