NavDash 2013 Commences Saturday 2nd March!

The popular NavDash Sprint Orienteering Series will commence on Saturday 2nd March, at Murdoch University.  Registration for the event will be open from 1.00pm to 2.00pm, with the first starters heading off at 1.30pm.  There will be a short briefing for beginners at around 1.20pm.

As the Be Active Metro Series of Orienteering finishes, keen orienteers will be preparing for the sprint and bush orienteering seasons. The NavDash sprint series will commence on Saturday 2nd March at Murdoch University, followed by a NavDash event at Ascot on 16th March.

Be Active Metro Series

This week’s Be Active Metro Series event will  start from John XXIII College in Mt Claremont, at the usual time of 5.00pm on Saturday. Registration will be open from around 4.15pm, and a briefing for beginners will be conducted at around 4.45pm, before a mass start at 5.00pm.

Saturday 2nd February

The Be Active MetrO Series heads South to another new area on Saturday 2nd February at 5.00pm, with an event near Adventure World in Bibra Lake. The event assembly area is adjacent to Bibra Lake, near the junction of Progress Drive and Gwilliam Drive.    

The event is not far from the coast – Coogee Beach or the beaches in the new Port Coogee Marina, and Fremantle’s many cafes are a 15-minute drive.

Come along to this weekend's Be Active Metro Series orienteering event and enjoy the vast, open expanse of parklands bordering Lake Joondalup.  This map also takes in the Wanneroo Showgrounds and other parkland areas and is a great location for an evening picnic.  There is also a large playground nearby for the kids to play on afterwards.

John XXIII College, Mt Claremont was the venue for this year’s WA State Sprint Orienteering Championship on August 10 2013 with a large field of 96 pre-entered competitors representing many states and countries! On a small, yet complex map which challenged map reading and running skills many pushed the pace and made small but costly errors.

This weekend (27-28 July) Queensland hosted the Australian MTBO Championships near Gympie in the Toolara South Forest.  Ricky Thackray, WA local MTBO Champion had a strong ride on Sunday to win the Australian Long Distance Open Men’s Championships.  Ricky’s ride was just on 40km and 2hours.  The map had a complex track network taking a lot of concentration to get the route choice right, after a fast start Ricky caught and was racing with Callum Fegg for much of the race.

Over a very cool, but almost dry, weekend the Dryandra Woodland MTBO map near Narrogin was thoroughly explored by orienteers on their mountain bikes for the Be Active Mountain Bike Middle and Long Distance WA Championships.

DSC01225The bush sprint map of Pre-Frazzle, first used at Easter 2011, provided a great venue for a complex Middle Distance event on Day One while Sunday was classic distance orienteering on Hill Park Dale, a nearby area with a mix of open running and extremely complex rock detail to challenge all comers. The event had biggest attendance of the year at a Foot Orienteering event with most people attending both of the days in cool but dry conditions.
