Exciting New Area for NavDash!

Saturday’s NavDash orienteering event at Black Swan Island is a brand new area, which includes extensive bush sections with subtle gully/spur features – just the thing to get experienced orienteers into the groove for the start of the bush season!  Come along and brush the cobwebs away from your rusty compass and contour skills in readiness for the Yetar Spring event the following day.

The next Sprint Orienteering event in the NavDash Series is at Black Swan Island, Ascot on Saturday 16th March.

NavDash registration will be open from 1.00pm to 2.00pm on Saturday, with the first starters heading off at 1.30pm. There will be a short briefing for beginners at around 1.20pm. NavDash events are short distance (2 – 4kms) held in a compact area with lots of map detail. The courses are suitable for beginners - navigating at slow speed – and experts who will be attempting to navigate

Murdoch University hosted the first of 10 sprint orienteering events to be held for the 2013 NavDash series. The map is popular, and with the WA Nomads heading to Adelaide next weekend for the first round of the 2013 National Orienteering League, the long course saw most of the team in action. Henry McNulty, 2012 State Sprint Champion took the win over Ricky Thackray with Sten Claessens in third place. First woman and fourth place overall was Rachel West.

The next Orienteering event is at Mt Billy next Sunday, 7th April. Mt Billy is in the upper Helena Valley, just over half-way from Perth to York – see detailed directions below, or open Eventor for Google Map.

Down on the farm
On Sunday orienteering returns to Gunapin, a beautiful farming property south west of York. The Expert courses run through bush areas with gullies and lots of rocks while the Active and Starter courses include some open areas. Come along the afternoon before and camp with the organisers (BYO everything). Our thanks go to the owners and managers of Gunapin for allowing us to use this area.

Sunday 18th August 2013: Jorgensen Park

A close in event to Perth, up in the hills of Kalamunda. Jorgensen Park has great views, lots of tracks and lovely scenery.  There is a small playground with swings and slides. There are BBQs and toilets in the park. This is the perfect opportunity for newcomers to come and try Orienteering. As always there will be volunteers on hand to assist you in selecting the appropriate course.

WA State Sprint Championships, Saturday 10 August 2013

THis weekend is final NavDash event for 2013 and is also the 2013 WA Sprint Orienteering Championships. Put your sprint orienteering skills to the test on a fun and interesting campus map. Enjoy this once a year chance to take part in the WA Sprint Orienteering Championship.

Sunday 25th August 2013

This weekend we head down to Bunbury. The South West Orienteering Trekkers (SWOT) are holding their event on Sunday afternoon. The map surrounds the Leschenault Inlet with nice parkland areas to have an enjoyable run on (it includes the most southerly mangroves in Australia http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2009/08/19/2661032.htm). This is a great opportunity to experience the friendly hospitality of the SWOT club.

This Sunday’s orienteering event is at Mt Observation, near York and once again features beautiful, open Wandoo forest.

A full range of courses will be available, including the usual Starter courses for beginners. Registration at the event will be open from 9.00am until 11.00am.

Directions: Follow Great Eastern Highway at first, through Mundaring to The Lakes Roadhouse (50kms from the City Centre). Immediately after the Roadhouse entry, turn right into Great Southern

The Julimar Map brings a mixture of spur, gully terrain with undulating woodland with sections of good rock detail.  Vegetation is also a mixture of open woodland (runnable) and regrowth (moderate to slow) due to die-back allowing undergrowth to flourish.  There a plenty of new tracks about due to Motor Cross riders. There is good linear features for interesting Starter courses – with cross-country options available for Starter 2 course.
