Wundabiniring

A crisp autumn morning greeted the orienteers at Wundabiniring on Sunday. Some mid-week rain had settled the dust and softened the ground making for very enjoyable orienteering conditions.

Just over 90 people went out on the range of courses, with distances set to a standard mindful of this being an early bush event. Those who wished to stretch their legs and get back into bush running could head north around the gullies, while a short hard course offered a navigation challenge...

Mt Billy SE

This area was mapped some years ago and hence, the vegetation (both yellow and green) should be interpreted accordingly. The terrain varies from open wandoo to scrappy and scratchy thicker vegetation. Full body cover, especially leg protection is highly recommended. Some recent changes to motorbike tracks have been mapped, but there may still be some unmapped tracks – especially west of Ball Rd, which only impacts H1 competitors.

Riverside Gardens, Milne St

This is a new and different area with a bit of everything for everybody. We have some excellent views of the river from both sides now. Ride around scenic Bayswater, delightful Ashfield, the vistas of Ascot and highlights of Maylands – explore the bike path, tracks and back streets, cross bridges, venture into parks and bush reserves, and check out the sites of former rubbish dumps now graced with delightful multistorey units and recreational parks.

Jorgensen Park, Kalamunda

The opening event of the 2024 Bush orienteering season was held as a ‘Simple’ event at Jorgensen Park (Kalamunda), under beautiful sunny skies and with temperatures reaching the mid-20s. Originally the event was going to be held at John Forrest NP, but extensive on-going works at the usual tavern assembly area, and heavy undergrowth in the western part of the map saw the event moved at late notice to Jorgensen Park.

South of Mount Observation

Welcome back to Wundabiniring Brook

With gentle contours and some good rock detail this is a great area for runnable orienteering. As just the second bush event for the 2024 season the courses will be towards the shorter lengths but still provide some very good navigational and physical challenges.

Swan Valley Adventure Centre

Yet another lovely sunny day for the sprint event at Swan Valley Adventure Centre, with a relatively tight strip of buildings and some extensive grounds and bush for navigational variety. The main courses took the best bits of the map to challenge runners, from the extremely passable Jane Brook Ditch to the courtyards and nooks of the built up section. Some tight competition at the top of the field, while the rest of us mortals had a good time.

Crescent Rd, Kalamunda

We will revisit Jorgensen Park, formerly the site of the Kalamunda Golf Club, as an introduction to the 2024 Bush orienteering season. The range of courses offer something for everyone - regardless of age, orienteering experience or fitness level. For those new to orienteering, coaches/instructors will be on hand to get you started.

This event is a WA Schools Team Selection Event.

Carine Senior High School

NavDash 4 visits Carine SHS for the fourth installment of the NavDash Sprint orienteering Series. Courses traverse the high school grounds visiting some never before navigated buildings and areas to test your orienteering skills. With three courses, Easy, Short and Long, all with intended winning times under 15 minutes, they provide options that should suit everyone.

Mardalup Park, Claisebrook

At first sight Claisebrook Cove seems too simple for a good sprint event, with almost none of the arrays of small built structures, nooks, alleys and dead ends found elsewhere. Consequently, the courses had many fast-running, left/right route choice legs but several sections of the map did offer multi-choice legs (up to four feasible routes) and, with the stress of racing, the courses were still complex enough for some people to make significant errors.

Fauntleroy Avenue, Belmont

Garvey Park is a picturesque location beside the Swan River. Entries are now open on Eventor.

4 day course in March

Ever thought about trying orienteering but not sure what to do?

Using Orienteering Australia's "Learn to Orienteer" resources, OWA has designed a four day course to introduce first timers to the skills of orienteering. Coaches will help guide you through the basics of reading an orienteering map and how an orienteering event works. You will have the opportunity to practice basic skills with coaches on hand to help you before trying an easy course on your own.

Edith Cowan University, Mt Lawley

"That was a lot of fun", thought setter Tom Brownlie, as he wrote this event report. It was a little rushed toward the start time with a minor issue quickly solved by the unflappable Melinda on the computer. The numerous offers of help before, during and after the event were very much appreciated and demonstrate the team work always present at events.

Walliabup Skate Park, Bibra Lake

This might seem like deja vu, but it's not a re-run of 2021’s Bike at Bibra! We have new controls, an extended map and some excellent weather* to entice you. Come for a ride around Bibra Lake, North Lake and Murdoch, exploring back streets, bush reserves and maybe some of a uni campus.

Maylands Foreshore reserve

Just over 80 orienteers attended the final MetrO series event of the 2023/2024 season in Maylands. The Swan River foreshore made for a nice assembly area, and competitors picked a large variety of routes around the lakes and through the parklands on the peninsula. Those who took the time to enjoy the many scenic views from control sites would not have been disappointed. Thankfully, the weather was a little cooler than last week at just over 30 degrees at the time of...

Edith Cowan University, Mt Lawley

Welcome to the first NavDash event for 2024! This event will take place on a Sunday morning on ECU's Mt Lawley campus. Entries are now open on Eventor.

NavDash, also known as sprint events, feature short courses (2–3.5 kms), usually held in a small, compact area with complex features, such as the buildings and passages of a university campus.
