Metro Series: 17th February 2018

One of the more pleasant ways to explore Perth is with a map in hand at the Metro Series, as orienteers discovered at Mt Pleasant on Saturday afternoon. River views, lakes and parks all featured on the map. Keen orienteers parked up to 2kms away, while several rode their bikes to get to the Mt Pleasant Metro Series event.

Clear blues perfect skies and warm temperatures greeted participants for the final MetrO event of 2017 - 2018 at the delightful Bayswater Riverside Gardens, in what was the last chance to make improvements to overall standings & snare a top 3 finish.

Perth Sprint Camp Weekend 3-5th March 2018

Over 600 maps, many sprint tips and many, many controls at the WA Sprint camp this weekend. Thanks to visiting coach Charlotte Watson for 3 full days of sprint training exercises, on campus and bush maps, that culminated with a sprint course and sprint relay this morning.

The MTBO season kicked off with a ride by the river on a fine but windy morning for the 42 participants at the North Fremantle MTBO event.

The event was less a race and more a novelty ramble to points of interest along the Swan River between Mosman Park and North Fremantle, but with the map area covering some steep sharp hills there were other challenges on top of answering questions to test the rider’s skills.

A trio of youth were responsible for the first NavDash of 2018 in the busy setting of Whiteman Park. Oliver Martin with Sarah Richards and Shaun Richards took the lead yesterday setting their first event.

Event Wrap: NavDash - Bunbury Senior High School

We were joined by 43 competitors for the NavDash at Bunbury SHS. Many had come from Perth, which was great – staying overnight and competing the next day for the bush event at Evedon. By far the most popular was the long course, 33 competitors. Event Wrap: Australian 3 Day Championship

19 West Australian orienteers enjoyed the Easter 2018 Australian 3 Day in Tasmania. Congrats to Carol Brownlie (W65) and Mike Howe (M75) who had a very successful weekend and both won their class in the Australian 3 Day.

After the score event at Samson it was back to a scatter this week at Carine and with many controls close to the start the crowd scattered in all directions. A popular choice for many people was to include a loop of the lake in their route enjoying the wetlands and parkwide trails.

The Sandy Bay reserve provided an excellent base for the Metro Series this week. Many orienteers were down by the river enjoying sandy beach, parklands and surrounds. With over 75 entries and many groups there were lots of dogs, teams, kids and bike riders all enjoying the event which was very well set by Sten Claessens.

A hive of activity at Cottesloe as Orienteers weaved their way around wedding guests, ballet concerts and beach goers. For this event orienteers ventured north to the modern suburb of Ellenbrook. Like many newer areas around Perth it’s designed with lots of loops, walkways, lanes, cul-de-sacs, parklands and water features, all providing some challenges for the competitors. Jolly Jackadder Japers Novelty event

On a windy Sunday morning 70 orienteers got into the Christmas spirit at the Novelty Orienteering event set by the Two Terrifying Teachers: Tom Brownlie and Daisy McCauley.

Metro Series: 6th January 2018

People were flying back into the Metro Series for 2018 at Ranford with Ricky’s kite shaped map. Just the thing to team with the afternoon sea breeze. Bike riders, large and small, also enjoyed the area along with a range of runners and family groups taking on the course.

MTBO Skills Camp Pemberton 11th - 14th January 2018

Pemberton Camp School was overrun with MTB Orienteers, both skilled and newcomers to the sport learning the basics of map reading, course setting and riding the trails to improve their abilities.  There were a range of attendees from juniors to veterans all with different levels of riding abilities.  Overall 19 people attended across the four days from Perth, Bunbury and two ladies from Albany!  Everyone is now looking forward to putting their...
