Well we're all done for the year now.
As some may have guessed from the name, Noel had us running around in circles in Swanbourne for the Annual Christmas Novelty Event.
Whilst experienced orienteers claimed it was one of the easier events set, newer orienteers were scratching their heads. Only Helen B was organised enough to have scissors and sellotape in the car to reconfigure the map (though maybe that made it too easy). The easiest option was definitely grabbing a coffee and sitting in the...

Wondering what is happening with events this weekend?
Unfortunately we don't know any more than you at the moment.
If it's at all possible, events will be held as planned. We have extended the Eventor registration period until 12 noon on Saturday so people can wait and see what is announced on Friday. If you choose to pre-register and the event doesn't go ahead then your entry fee will be fully refunded via PayPal.
SWOT's event in Bunbury is a MapRunF event, so there shouldn't be any issues...

Saturday 8th June 2019
A number of die-hard mountain bike orienteers braved the inclement weather to come to Carinyah for this year’s 3rd MTBO event. The afternoon bagan well, nice and sunny and perfect for a 7 km ride around the Carinyah map with the Guided Tour. It was a social ride that also covered some good navigation tips. Afterwards we practiced bike handling skills - heavy pedals & light hands and put it all to the test. Focusing on putting all your weight to your pedals helps keep the...

Some 53 competitors braved the weather and came and enjoyed the Russell Gully event set by first time setter Sarah Richards, who is in the middle of sitting her Year 11 exams. The rain added to the challenge with slippery rock surfaces and water in the creeks. The long course included a map flip to keep the course interesting and on the short course half the branches has blown off the dead tree in the strong winds. The rain held off an most competitors managed to get run...

SW Malmalling, east of Mundaring
Finally it’s started raining! Luckily we managed to hold this event in a window of fine weather, but it was nice to see the creeks running and to hear the frogs making a racket in the puddles. Or should that be kids making a racket in the puddles?
Malmalling is always tougher than it seems it should be and the ever present grass trees appeared to frustrate the best efforts of some on the day.

Wondering how to best approach a metro score event?
With several on the program for the 2017 – 2018 Metro Series it’s a good time to understand how the score events work and to make the best use of your allocated time on the map.
What you need to know
For score events, participants can visit as many or as few controls as they choose in the 60 minute time limit. So first up you need to have a good idea of what distance you can cover in that time. Each minute you are back late after the 60...

Warranine, near Bakers Hill
After a rather cool start to the day (minus 2c driving through Wooroloo) the day turned into a sunny autumn day and 81 people enjoyed the ideal conditions. The map area used was part of that used for the 2014 Australian Champs and provided a mix of technical terrain and open running.
Thanks to Helen & Ken Post as organisers and for collecting and towing the caravan to the event and Dan Greig for the return. Ken with Dave McCauley also had the...

Kenine Hill, near Woodanilling
If you couldn't get to the WA Classic (2nd and 3rd June) at Kenine Hill you missed a great weekend! 88 people enjoyed the 2 day event, with many camping on the map overnight. Blessed with fantastic weather on both days, the mix of granite terrain and open paddock made for pleasantrunning. It was great to see the juniors enjoying their time together - from running their individual courses, playing footy, skills activities with Rob West,...

The Annual OWA Award and Volunteer Dinner on Saturday 29th October is a celebration of the year and a chance to acknowledge our champions, volunteers and achievements over the past year. And a chance to leave the gaiters off and put on the glad rags!
Once again, we had the chance to see the year in review with a wonderful photo show collated by Rob West. This year a “what were they thinking” game complimented the photos, making use of some of the fun photos over the year.
After dinner and onto...

Banyowla Regional Park
Saturday was a hilly day filled with sunshine, pea gravel, honkey nuts, dirt bike trails and controls placed in bush, urban and open areas. There was a huge variety of entrants with many people riding the less hilly short course. The Medium course could have been shorter to account for the hills, while the Long course had lots of hills and difficult route choice decisions to make. Well done to everyone who ventured out on this map!

Leeming Senior High School
Following on from the inaugural event last year, Leeming Senior High School was the venue for the UltraSprint this year. Three courses shoe-horned into a smallish campus, lots of twists and turns and head scratching. The school gardeners had been enthusiastically removing trees in the lead up to the event (unbeknown to the setter until the day before!) and it would seem they even relocated some trees (or was that the mapper’s slightly dodgy...
