Sixty-nine orienteers travelled to Gunapin Ridge to enjoy a great (if not the great) area for orienteering in WA. A beautiful, cool day greeted the competitors, there was no rain in sight. I planned eight courses with the view that a sprint championship and a long distance championship were in the offing next weekend. Apart from one control, #126, that was misplaced, many competitors commented that they were happy with the variety of courses and the challenge that they presented.

Held over the weekend at Langford Park (Middle Distance set by Ian Dalton) and Marrinup North (Long Distance mapped and set by Duncan Sullivan), this year’s championships featured great courses and splendid weather. We are returning to Camp Kerem, Bullsbrook, with activities on site and training on a bush map and attending the OWA event at John Forrest National Park. The camp will be held over two days and two nights at the start of the July School holidays. These will be led by a team of nine OWA coaches.
We are looking for young people who enjoy orienteering, want to learn more about it and have a fun time with other young people.

Sunday 4th August 2019
Twenty seven teams competed in the relays at the picturesque but wet John Forrest National Park on Sunday morning. Most people were happy with the courses but running times were a little slower than expected which in part was the result of slippery conditions in the steep, rocky bush on the northern half of the map.

LOST (165 points) won the event and will receive the coveted Rutty Rock at the annual dinner. BO was second with 118 points, KO third with 101 points and WOW...

Location: Owen Rd, Darlington

Mostly sunny with a cool easterly breeze made for great riding conditions at this event. Centred in the village of Darlington, the thirty riders took to the Heritage Trail and the steep hills with a choice of three challenging courses ranging from 9kms to 25kms. Many of the riders tried not to be distracted by the beautiful water flowing down the creeks and the numerous small waterfalls. One highlight was the close tussle between father and...

Avon Valley National Park
Approximately 85 people (including 66 official competitors) attended the Middle Distance Championships at the Avon Valley National Park on a generally dry day. The courses traversed a variety of moderately steep incised drainage and rocky sections with a range of vegetation from open forest to thicker, better-to-avoid bush. Fastest times were mainly as planned, with the exception of the E course which was obviously too short/easy for Aldo Bosman!

Edith Cowan University, Mt. Lawley
The ECU Mt Lawley State League Navdash event was held on Saturday afternoon in some wintry conditions. Courses were offered by first time setter, Ellie Sansom and they provided plenty to think about. There were lots of legs with route choice and plenty of twists and turns requiring competitors to work hard to keep up with the navigation. Thanks for all your work on the event Ellie. Ellie was assisted by controller Rachel West.

Red Hill, John Forrest National Park NE
Over 100 people came to Red Hill on Sunday - a winter's day perfect for orienteering and getting time in Nature. There was a smattering of wildflowers – Hibbertia, Hovea and others – and the flowing creeks provided some fun for the younger juniors. The juniors were well represented, with a bus load coming from the Junior O camp to hone their skills.

Carol Brownlie was also unanimously approved as a life member of Orienteering Western Australia by attendees of the 2021 AGM on 14 March.
The proposal had been prepared without her knowledge - not bad given she was Secretary of OWA and had prepared the agenda. Edward's citation for Carol has also been amended following information provided by her husband.

Carol Brownlie
Life Membership Award
Carol Brownlie joined WOW and OWA in 1987/88. Since then, Carol has supported OWA at every level from...

Jan Fletcher was unanimously approved as a life member of Orienteering Western Australia by attendees of the 2021 AGM on 14 March.
The proposal had been prepared without her knowledge - quite a feat when she is Vice President of OWA. Edward had worked with people to prepare the citation (now amended following Ian's input):

Janet Fletcher
Life Membership Award
Janet Fletcher joined LOST and OWA in 1979 after being introduced to orienteering while living in Canada. Since then, Janet has, for...

With the end of the MetrO Series it's time to get back into the bush! Well not quite but the Perth Waldorf sprint event is as near as you're going to get until the cooler months. Set in a natural bush setting in Bibra Lake, you can almost forget you're in the city as you race around a "very" tightly knit campus featuring oddly shaped and non-uniformly spaced buildings, a couple of grassed areas, playground equipment (for the kids of course) and many pathways to keep you on your toes. If you're...

Register <here> for the penultimate 2020/21 MetrO event of the season!

This event takes place on a (final?) new tRicky map at Claisebrook. A more central location couldn't be asked for. The area has a lot of history and you'd be hard pressed to recognise it if you were transported back in time 150 years. Orienteers in today's age will have their work cut out for them with a super compact course (it's on a 1:8000 map!) with plenty of parkland, roaring rivers (well the sauntering Swan at least),...

The map area includes open parkland, many paths and tracks, some runnable forest, (almost) no roads and (definitely) no walking...
