Saturday 1st February, 2020
A beautiful cool sea breeze made for ideal conditions for the courses set by brothers Andries and Luan Swart. The map covered three different areas, with the prominent Star Swamp Reserve, then some hilly streets and also open running on the big oval complex. The courses were very well set and it seemed like everyone completed a different route.
Thanks to the setters, Luan and Andries Swart. Thank you also to the many people who helped in various ways to make the...

Saturday 18th January 2020
The weekend's trip down to Rockingham saw sun, sand, a number of lakes and a very strong south-westerly wind that tried to blow everything away at the start. Competitors had slightly longer courses to get out to the interesting parts of the map and included long legs between controls to create route choice headaches in addition to a number of "traps" to lure the unwary into isolated controls.
Thanks to everyone for coming and hopefully it was an enjoyable and...

The first event for 2020 was on a new map in Kelmscott & Camillo in Perth's south east. Courses were set to maximise the park and bush area at John Dunn oval with many natural and man made features to use for control sites. All participants had to leave the reserve at some point to collect the required number of controls and many found the task of deciding which extras to collect quite challenging with several small bunches of controls located nearby that potentially led...

Due to the hot conditions the Maylands Metro Series event was modified to be non competitive. Course lengths were also reduced and there was no mass start or official timing. A small group of 25 ventured out into the hot westerly wind, some even ran. Icy poles and watermelon were provided for refreshment at the finish, which was very well received.
This event was set by junior state team rep Riley Mcfarlane, who put out some controls, then did a 100m relay final at...

MetrO Series no. 6 for 2019/20 was held at Bassendean, with a pleasant cool change after a very hot week, and even a couple of showers earlier in the afternoon. The course included a new area to the North, with compulsory crossing points for Guildford Road and the Midland Rail line, and took in Success Hill Reserve and parts of historic Bassendean town centre.
Ken Brownlie won the Short course from Amy Dufty, albeit with a sub-optimal route, while Nick Dale just...

With a more reasonable weather forecast this week the Trigg MetrO series event had a good turnout of close to 100 participants. It was great to see plenty of newcomers trying the sport out for the first time. There was an interesting mix of bushland tracks and streets and feedback suggests working out a good route choice was challenging. The many offers of help to collect controls after the event...

Saturday 16th November 2019

Last Saturday’s MetrO event at Manning Park proved very challenging for many competitors. Distances for the short, medium and long courses were no different from other events, but winning times were considerably slower due to the hot weather, hilly terrain and difficulty of running on the narrow sandy and rocky trails. The navigation in the complex trail network was also trickier than at most MetrO events, and even the winners admitted to making a mistake or two (or...

The Piney Lakes Metro Series event was held on Saturday afternoon with courses set by first time MetrO series setters, Michael and Patrick Dufty (pictured above). They came up with some interesting and challenging courses and also did a substantial remap of the area. The weather forecast was for a sizzling hot day, however the sea breeze came in early enough that the temperature had cooled rapidly to much better running weather by the start of the event.

Location: Fred Jacoby Park near Mundaring Weir
The Trail-O has become a regular annual feature on the calendar, and this year’s event was held at North Ledge with start and finish at Fred Jacoby Park. Eighty people came out and very few of those would have managed to stay dry with several heavy showers coming through during the event. The little stream that the string course crossed turned into a raging torrent, but the kids had good fun with the water and mud.

Fine weather and a tough challenge on difficult terrain were enjoyed by 80+ orienteers on Sunday at Julimar. Sharp rocks were sometimes hard to distinguish in the areas of heavily burnt ground and there were a number of trips and falls. Well done to all who took part!

Ninety people enjoyed glorious orienteering weather (as promised) whilst competing in SOL courses set by Mike Howe. With much of the terrain being fairly open, times were generally quite fast. Blue and pink lady orchids and some spider orchids could be spotted decorating the landscape, along with many other wildflowers.
Many thanks to Mike Howe for the courses, Ian Fletcher who towed the caravan, Moreen Cox who towed the toilet, Eddie...
