Nganga

Orienteers were out in force for the 7th bush event of the season at Ngangaguringguring.

Although this was the first event of spring and there were plenty of wild flowers in bloom, the sun wasn't keen to show its face, though the overcast weather provided good running conditions.

As far as the terrain went, the wide open forest combined with the complex grantite was challenging for some but great for Rachel showing some beginners on a guided moderate course following...

MTBO LD Champs

Whilst most runners had a weekend off, 30 mountain bikers (plus a runner too) met in Roleystone for the WA State MTBO Long Distance Championships.

Whilst not all participants were competing in the State Champs, there were a good number of entrants taking part, including Andrew Martin on his recumbant bike and Robert Pullella on his e-bike.
With a number of people not finishing, the loose and rocky gravel tracks possilby provided more than "challenges" for some...

Hale NavDash

This was the first event of the double-header weekend and was the Sprint SOL event.
Orienteer of the Year points were available and some more details of the sledge category were introduced by Jan Fletcher.
While several competitors decided to take advantage of the opportunity to run a second course, Ricky ran all three courses and not content with that, ran some laps of the oval too.  It was also great to see the younger orienteers racing round the oval and competing...

Spice Brook 2020What a difference a day made
Not much more than 12 hours
From sunshine and flowers
Then there was rain...and rain...
...and mud...and a bit more rain.

Tracy Burns and family spent a lovely afternoon and evening on Saturday at Spice Brook, putting out controls and then camping in the paddock.  Unfortuntely the weather changed overnight and there were forecasts of 100km/hr winds and rain of 20mm+.

So raindrops started falling on everyone's heads, but still around 50 orienteers...

 Scotch NavDash

It was a chilly start to the day on Sunday but at least not far to go for most for the first NavDash event on the restarted Sprint Series at Scotch College in Swanbourne.

Our COVID protocols seem to be working well with a fine example of social distancing at the start.

More than 80 people were challenged by the twists and turns of the school campus, a two-sided map and then ending with an open run across the Scotch playing field to reach the finish.

Hard courses were...

Sunday 26th July 2020 Umuna SOL

Clouds and rain cleared to reveal blue skies and expansive hilltop views for the Umuna event.  Open paddocks and dispersed woodland made for mostly unutilised fast conditions. Plodding orienteers and scattering roos shared the landscape.

Air gasping displays of poor post covid fitness levels were evident at the finish by those conscious they were being watched on the home straight. Much satisfaction was the sounding at the post race picnics.

As this was a State...

Sunday 19th July 2020 Family MTBO1

It was a chilly start in Karragullen for the first event in the restart program.

This was a combined MTBO/ Trail-O event, brought about as runners were turning up unofficially for MTBO events last year.  With the suggestion that there may be interest, we thought we'd give it a try.  The demand was certainly there.  While some were surprised to find the course lengths for the trail runs were the same as for the MTBO courses, they were not dispirited and a gathering of...

Sunday 12th July 2020 Jan Lovers Lane

The sun shone but numbers were down a little for our second event of the season at Lovers Lane near Toodyay.

Whilst parts of the location were picturesque, some orienteers are not too keen on the quarry location.  Many who came were not enjoying the steeper parts of the terrain or the parrot bush.  However, while there may not have been too much love for the setters despite the venue name, being out in the winter sunshine righted most wrongs and many stayed after the event to...

Sunday 5th July 2020 photo Bush 1

At the first event since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted more than 100 people came to the challenging terrain of the overgrown golf course at Jorgensen Park in Kalamunda.

Recent prescribed burns had limited the available bush area but nevertheless course setter Dan Greig skillfully folded the various courses through, across and around the confusing old fairways. The ambitious and energetic orienteers on the H2 course ran a combination of both H3 and H4 courses while...

Saturday 22nd February 2020  CityBeachNorthMetro awards

The last event of the 2019-20 MetrO series was organised by Nick and first-time setter Zali Dale. The controls were spread over the suburban streets and numerous small parks between The Boulevard and Hale Road with ocean views from some of the western-most controls. There were lots of hills so the shortest route between controls was not necessarily the fastest. Overall, it was a great way to end the latest MetrO series.

Afterwards Rachel West, the Series...

Saturday 15th February 2020   KentStFinish2020

Set by Hadrien Devillepoix and Ellie Sansom, this challenging course was a combination of Canning River Reserve and suburban streets with only two bridge crossings. The weather was cool and humid and was well attended by 75 participants.

For those with a competitive streak: Nick Dale, having sealed a win in the series on the medium course, decided to take on the long course this week. Craig Dufty however took the line honours on the long, 4 mins ahead of Nick, with...

Saturday 18th January 2020 Rockingham2020 sarah

The weekend's trip down to Rockingham saw sun, sand, a number of lakes and a very strong south-westerly wind that tried to blow everything away at the start.  Competitors had slightly longer courses to get out to the interesting parts of the map and included long legs between controls to create route choice headaches in addition to a number of "traps" to lure the unwary into isolated controls.

Thanks to everyone for coming and hopefully it was an enjoyable and...
