This weekend is the start of the winter series with the first of 7 NavDash events.
The courses are mainly in parkland so the control sites are mostly on visible features, not in nooks and crannies as can be the case in heavily built areas. Come and enjoy a pleasant area beside the Canning River (which was actually flowing 2 weeks before the event).
If you're up for the challenge, see how quickly you can get round the course without mispunching. You're always welcome to run another course...

There's no orienteering event this coming weekend - 6/7 March. If you are keen to get out on a map, then download one of the Anytime Orienteering Courses. There are several to choose from.
The next organised orienteering event is NavDash 2 at Garvey Park. NavDash events are a great way to get into orienteering. Come and have a go.

Our next orienteering event is NavDash 2 at Garvey Park. NavDash events are a great way to get into orienteering. Come and have a go.
If you're up for the challenge, see how quickly you can get round the course without mispunching. You're always welcome to run another course afterwards if you want to (no additional charge).
If you want to take things at a more leisurely place, that's no problem. Running's not compulsory - just be back at the assembly area by 11:30am. As the controls are close...

With the end of the MetrO Series it's time to get back into the bush! Well not quite but the Perth Waldorf sprint event is as near as you're going to get until the cooler months. Set in a natural bush setting in Bibra Lake, you can almost forget you're in the city as you race around a "very" tightly knit campus featuring oddly shaped and non-uniformly spaced buildings, a couple of grassed areas, playground equipment (for the kids of course) and many pathways to keep you on your toes. If you're...

After a threatening Saturday and a millimetre of rain overnight the day dawned fine but cool. When the organisers and setting team arrived there was fog in the valley which just added extra moisture to the luxuriant growth of cape weed covering the assembly area and much of the course. The day went well, there were some fast times and most competitors enjoyed the open terrain interspersed with very detailed rocky areas. We welcomed a few newcomers including one of the local farmers and his son.

Wireless Hill
Even members with smooth skins greatly enjoyed Noel Schoknecht’s novelty event “Wrinkles on Wireless at Christmas” at Wireless Hill Park last Sunday.
Maintaining his reputation for devious ingenuity Noel provided a square map which confusingly had several controls duplicated and three Start triangles. This was explained when he handed out instruction sheets for complex folding of the map, origami-style, to form a star shape to show only the genuine controls and terrain....

Geneff Park, Sorrento
Eighty-two people attended the event at Sorrento on a blustery and cool day. The start was in a shady, grassy depression which meant an uphill start for everyone.
This time the super-veteran men outpaced the juniors with Noel Schoknecht taking first place on the short course. Liam Dufty again dominated the men's medium course with Sten Claessens completing the long course in just under 36 minutes. Our younger female competitors dominated the short and medium courses with...

Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre, Wembley
Almost 100 people, including a pleasing number of juniors amongst the first-timers and recent beginners, took part in the Herdsman Lake event in dry, cool conditions. The assembly area was the Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre, which provided coffee as well as pleasant surroundings. Feedback after the event was very positive (despite some frustrations with downloading SI data for people who entered at the event) with many commenting on the pleasant lakeside...

Jeff Joseph Reserve, The Strand, Applecross
After a number of events held in hot conditions, Event 6 of the MetrO series in Applecross enjoyed cooler weather. About 100 participants took on the courses that featured the picturesque river foreshore and jacaranda-lined streets. It was especially great to see a large number of newcomers giving orienteering a go, including many juniors.
There were some tight finishes between several runners. Rohan Braid put in a massive final sprint to deny Duncan...

Dianella Regional Open Space, Dianella
The Dianella Regional Open Space was first mapped by Bryan Hardy in the early 1980s, and was used for summer night orienteering events at that time. Later, it was used in the Be Active Schools program, including for inter-school competitions. Many changes to the area have been made by the City of Stirling in recent years, so a full update was required. The park is large enough to support a Short MetrO course which does not require road crossings.
The...

Ferndale Park, Dampier Way, Ferndale
Although it was one of the hottest days we've had so far in this MetrO season there was a good turn out for the Bannister Creek event. The trees around the creek and Canning River offered some great shade, and some tricky map reading led to a few people cooling off in the un-crossable river. It was good to see some newcomers, with a few making it into the top results!
Noel Schoknecht was the fastest on the Short course, with Ruben Claessens not far behind...
