TODAY - Saturday 7th November

Location: Thornlie Community Centre, 14 Glenbrook Rd, Thornlie

The first event of the Metro season is in Thornlie on the banks of the gently flowing Canning River in all its leafy goodness. You can explore the river, pat the ducks, feed the fishes or go exploring the streets looking for controls if you'd rather do that instead.

Join us this afternoon for the start of the season.

Urban Adventure

Ever thought about trying orienteering but not sure what to do?

We are running an introductory session for beginners at Whiteman Park, using our Anytime Orienteering Course there.  Come along for an afternoon session of activities on Saturday 17 April, finishing with an afternoon tea.

After a threatening Saturday and a millimetre of rain overnight the day dawned fine but cool. When the organisers and setting team arrived there was fog in the valley which just added extra moisture to the luxuriant growth of cape weed covering the assembly area and much of the course. The day went well, there were some fast times and most competitors enjoyed the open terrain interspersed with very detailed rocky areas. We welcomed a few newcomers including one of the local farmers and his son.

Wireless Hill

Even members with smooth skins greatly enjoyed Noel Schoknecht’s novelty event “Wrinkles on Wireless at Christmas” at Wireless Hill Park last Sunday.

Maintaining his reputation for devious ingenuity Noel provided a square map which confusingly had several controls duplicated and three Start triangles. This was explained when he handed out instruction sheets for complex folding of the map, origami-style, to form a star shape to show only the genuine controls and terrain.

Geneff Park, Sorrento

Eighty-two people attended the event at Sorrento on a blustery and cool day. The start was in a shady, grassy depression which meant an uphill start for everyone.

This time the super-veteran men outpaced the juniors with Noel Schoknecht taking first place on the short course. Liam Dufty again dominated the men's medium course with Sten Claessens completing the long course in just under 36 minutes. Our younger female competitors dominated the short and medium courses with

Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre, Wembley

Almost 100 people, including a pleasing number of juniors amongst the first-timers and recent beginners, took part in the Herdsman Lake event in dry, cool conditions. The assembly area was the Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre, which provided coffee as well as pleasant surroundings. Feedback after the event was very positive (despite some frustrations with downloading SI data for people who entered at the event) with many commenting on the pleasant lakeside

Jeff Joseph Reserve, The Strand, Applecross

After a number of events held in hot conditions, Event 6 of the MetrO series in Applecross enjoyed cooler weather. About 100 participants took on the courses that featured the picturesque river foreshore and jacaranda-lined streets. It was especially great to see a large number of newcomers giving orienteering a go, including many juniors.

There were some tight finishes between several runners. Rohan Braid put in a massive final sprint to deny Duncan

Dianella Regional Open Space, Dianella

The Dianella Regional Open Space was first mapped by Bryan Hardy in the early 1980s, and was used for summer night orienteering events at that time. Later, it was used in the Be Active Schools program, including for inter-school competitions. Many changes to the area have been made by the City of Stirling in recent years, so a full update was required. The park is large enough to support a Short MetrO course which does not require road crossings.

Ferndale Park, Dampier Way, Ferndale

Although it was one of the hottest days we've had so far in this MetrO season there was a good turn out for the Bannister Creek event. The trees around the creek and Canning River offered some great shade, and some tricky map reading led to a few people cooling off in the un-crossable river. It was good to see some newcomers, with a few making it into the top results!

Noel Schoknecht was the fastest on the Short course, with Ruben Claessens not far behind

Brown Park Recreation & Community Centre, Salisbury Road, Swan View

Seventy-four participants took part in the event at Swan View in rather hot conditions with competitors seeking the shade before the start. Fortunately, there was a cool breeze to welcome them back at the finish.

There were several controls along the Railway Heritage Trail that were included in possible route choices for both medium and long courses. Again, a junior runner was the fastest on the short course with Rohan Braid

Willetton Playgroup, 6 Kingfisher Loop, Willetton

Eighty nine participants attended the second MetrO event for the season on the Burrendah map. The area provided free flowing route choices around the streets and parklands of Willetton with the winning competitors completing their courses within the expected time frames. The map had not been used for some years so the setters made updates to many of the parks and playgrounds in the area but somehow managed to miss a “new” street in the

Mt Claremont Primary School

The MetrO season has been ushered in with beautiful weather greeting us at the first event, which was held in Mt Claremont. There was a good turnout of 84 entries, including a few teams to bring the number of people running to ~90. It was pleasing to see quite a few new faces, including a number of kids.

Carine Senior High School, Osmaston Road, Carine

The winter orienteering season concluded with the Sprint Championships at Carine SHS, held over from mid-September due to the late revelation of conflicting bookings. Difficulties were compounded by the early start to building works in the southeast of the map, which meant that the setter, Nick Dale, had to revise parts of all courses three days before the event.

This was the first event at Carine SHS and the tight grouping of buildings combined

Banyowla Regional Park, Martin

The delayed 2021 MTBO Long Championships were finally completed on the daunting Banyowla scarp in Martin.

Twenty-three competitors conquered their fears to participate and were rewarded with a profusion of wildflowers, benign weather and four interesting courses - which challenged even the best. There were a few DNF's and MP’s, but the majority of riders completed the arduous test, including a first time orienteer, and one rider who had to stop halfway round to
