The University of Western Australia
Changes to terrain at universities seem to be unpredictable but fortunately the music event in the pre-start area was over by noon, and the temporary fencing surrounding a control on course 1 was dismantled enough in time to allow access and exit along mapped routes. We had been warned about a wedding which may be why car parking was less easy than expected.

The Long Distance Championships are one of our major events for the year. Pre-entry is required for championship courses, with entry closing at midnight on Sunday 11th September. A limited number of Enter on the Day courses will be available. While the map was first produced many years ago, the area used for these championships has not been used in over a decade. Participants whose primary interest is not competing are likely to find beautiful wildflowers to distract them.

Swan Valley
No jumbucks were spotted, but we did see kangaroos, emus, echidnas, goats and trail runners. Those orienteers carefully guiding their feet over the rocky ground may have spotted some blue leschenaultias and fringed lilies. The ridge also provided expansive views up the lower Avon Valley
and across the coastal plain and encroaching suburbia.

In spite of the University authorities’ stringent requirements and exclusion of a large part of the previous map, suitable terrain remained for adequate courses, set by Ken Brownlie under assiduous control by Anthea Feaver.
Nearly 125 people took part including 16 who ran more than one course; a couple of enthusiastic youngsters, and elders, doing all four.

Whiteman Park
It was a dark and stormy night before the Primary School Championships on 17 August 2022. On the morning of the event, two schools decided not to attend because of the predicted severe weather. The event Organisers had an early morning consultation with BOM Perth and decided to continue with the event. Thankfully, apart from one deluge of rain during setup the rain held off until after the end of the event. Eighty-five students from 10 schools participated. Thirty-one volunteers

Swan Valley
Jumbuck Ridge is a great area close to Perth with beautiful views over the city and the Swan Valley. The streams are flowing and the bush is very pleasant at this time of year. The hard and moderate courses are mostly downhill as the start is 75 m higher than the finish, while the E and VE course remain at lower altitude. Enjoy a picnic after the event near the roaring rapids.

Pickering Brook
Fine weather and dust (but not mud) free tracks greeted nearly 40 riders and runners to the north east corner of tRicky’s monster Carinyah MTBO map. A lot of earthworks by the authorities trying to keep out 4WDrivers et al added to the usual challenges in our forests (exposed laterite, fallen timber and gumnuts, etc) but all emerged unscathed, professing enjoyment and with some close run contests and winning times fairly close to the guidelines.
