Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th June

This weekend brings a double-header with a NavDash event on Saturday 17th and a Bush event on Sunday 18th June!

Both of these are State Orienteering League (SOL) events, so you'll be able to earn some OY points. In addition, both events are WA Schools Team Selection Events. They are also suitable for beginners and families.

Julimar State Forest

There were 71 orienteers who competed in the first “bush” event of the year. Despite a rather cool start to the day, the middle of the day provided sunshine for the lunchtime picnickers.

Sunday 4th - Monday 5th June

Woodanilling

This year's Winter Classic will be held at Kenine Hill on the Sunday and Monday of the June Long Weekend! This is the only event on the OWA calendar this year where your performance over two days counts for the overall result. Awards are made for first male and first female on each course, based on cumulative time over the two days.

Manning Park, Spearwood

Cool and blustery conditions heralded the start of the Bush season at Manning Park. A total of 89 competitors took on one of the five courses. Thankfully the rain held off, though most competitors had to battle with the wind to get their maps into a map bag.

Dwellingup Trails and Visitor Centre, Dwellingup

With many controls close to the event centre in town, this event is well suited to beginners, families, gravel bikes, and even walkers/runners (enter foot class). E-bikes welcome - enter the E - Bike class! No bike? No problem! You can hire a mountain bike or e-bike from Dwellingup Adventures the start location for $35.

Roleystone

Some 34 starters braved the ominous comments about contours and were rewarded with a beautiful autumn morning for a ride in the hills and a coffee and treats at the local markets.

Julimar State Forest

This is one of our premier complex spur and gully bush areas with additional rock detail but also a network of watercourses and tracks for the easier courses. Generally, the area is pretty runnable except close to Spice Brook which has a band of thicker vegetation along it. The VE and H5 courses ONLY do not need to cross the creek.

Hale School, Wembley Downs

It unexpectedly turned out to be a beautiful day for a run in the luscious school grounds of Hale. Lots of twists and turns kept competitors on their toes. We were very appreciative of Hale School for being very supportive of the event and helping make it enjoyable for all. The NavDash had 96 starters and 106 courses were run. It was great to have such age diversity in attendance including some first timers.

Roleystone

Enjoy exploring the hills, valleys, cul-de-sacs, bush tracks and reserves in Roleystone on your bike. This event is based in the residential areas, not in the bush areas that surround it. Contours will feature in your route choice.

Manning Park, Spearwood

Manning Park offers a great opportunity to (re)introduce yourself to a bit of bush orienteering in a convenient metropolitan location. A range of courses from the beginner level through to the more advanced have been set using the lake, park and the ridge of coastal bushland with its multitude of tracks crisscrossing it.

Troy Park, Burke Drive, Attadale

The MTBO season opened on Sunday 2 April with a scatter time limited event using MapRun in Attadale and Applecross. The event attracted over 50 participants with many new to MTBO. Although MapRun challenges make the point results questionable, the 39 controls provided a solid challenge within the two hour time limit.

North Lake Senior Campus, Kardinya

The third NavDash event of the year saw a huge turn out of people (69 on the long course alone!). A brand new map, drawn specifically for this event, provided many tricky challenges, yet still enabled some crazy speeds to be reached. Many thanks to the North Lake Senior Campus Admin staff for allowing us access to the area. It shows that some tight campuses can be used for our local sprint orienteering events.

Hale School, Wembley Downs

Come and enjoy a sprint at the Hale School campus in Wembley Downs, with beautiful green lawns, neat gardens and intricate buildings. Be prepared for interesting route choices, intense navigation around the buildings and fast legs in the open. Afterwards, there are plenty of options – visit a local coffee shop, picnic at Bold Park or enjoy a swim and lunch at the beach.

Russell's Gully, Beeches Mews, Brigadoon

Without rain, the ground at Brigadoon was rock hard and making holes for control stands was very difficult. Many of the control stands had a little rock cairn for support. Fortunately, this map does not have any shortage of small rocks.

Troy Park, Burke Drive, Attadale

Come and enjoy a cycle around Attadale/Applecross! The course covers mainly residential streets, with gravel paths in nature reserves and cycle paths along the river. This event is suited to beginners, families and runners. E-bikes welcome.
