The orienteering event at Jumbuck Ridge was a success, with approximately 80 competitors enjoying a sunny but cool day. The area's steep and challenging terrain provided an exciting experience for participants.
The beautiful and historic Araluen Botanic Park in the hills of the Canning River valley was the venue for this event. Heavy rain in the weeks leading up had left the park lush, with the streams full and flowing, and recent very cold days had enticed the earliest bulbs out - small white lillies and yellow daffodils. But on the day the sun came out and it was a wonderful day for a run.
Held over three days, the winter camp was held in stunning fine weather with very cold mornings. Twenty juniors attended and ten adults instructed and supervised. WA Schools Team (see below) was announced at the end of the camp.
Come and explore the mostly open eucalypt forest with scattered rock features - boulders, rocky ground, bare rock surfaces and cliffs - and watercourses, although there may not be any water in the watercourse beds (depending on recent rainfall). Some parts have been burnt recently and are quite open, but thicker vegetation areas remain.
The Club Relays are a fun event open to all members. The park has some very open runnable "fairways" plus areas of bush to challenge your navigational skills. Come, wear your club tops and help your club vie for the prestigious Rutty Rock.
Entries for the club relays are now closed, but there are several enter on the day courses available.
The Orienteering Association of Western Australia (OWA) held the 2023 Secondary Schools Orienteering Championships at Manning Park on Wednesday 7th June. Twenty-one volunteers from OAWA helped run the event and Nathan Johnston from City of Cockburn ensured the event went smoothly.
Come and enjoy the rocks, valleys and coastal views while navigating around your course.
The area was last used for the 2018 Middle Distance Championships. The start for all courses will begin at a high location to limit the amount of climb on the shorter courses, so give yourself enough time to get up there with all your gear. Clear and checks will be at registration and at the start.
The arrival at Kenine was on a clear afternoon. Recent rains had enabled seeding in the Kenine paddock and sheep were running in the top triangle paddock – which left Bulloak Lane for campers. We arrived in Dwellingup on Sunday morning to beautiful clear blue skies. There was a downside to this, because at 8.30am the mercury was hovering at only 6°C. Nonetheless, 30 odd mountain bikers ranging from 8yrs old to 70+ arrived to test the courses set by Andre Morkel.
This weekend brings a double-header with a NavDash event on Saturday 17th and a Bush event on Sunday 18th June!

Looking at some of the Livelox routes most people managed the spur gully terrain very well - even after a long break from bush running. A number of runners had trouble with a control on the very convoluted Spice Brook, a control which on reflection should not have been used. Despite spending
