Bibra Lake

There was a good turnout to the event with a large number of new competitors and family groups attending on the long weekend. The map covered the winding streets of the suburb of Bibra Lake and limestone paths around the eastern side of the lake.

Ern Halliday Recreation Camp, Hillarys

The OWA Junior Summer Orienteering Camp was held at Ern Halliday Recreation Camp, Hillary's. A team of OWA coaches led activities on site and nearby sprint ‘O’ maps for three days and three nights.

Hillarys Park, Hillarys

The weather was kind - not too warm and the sea breeze had arrived. As course setter Nick said, there were lots of twisting roads to untangle, and not just horizontal directions to consider! And there was a very good turnout of participants, both new and experienced.

Chichester Park, Woodvale

The MetrO series returns to Woodvale this year for the first time in 15 years! The newly updated map covers the north eastern part of the suburb, offering the beautiful Yellagonga regional park, a frisbee golf course and some tricky connecting paths. Starting in Chichester Park, route planning will be the key to whizzing through Woodvale!

Minim Cove Park, Mosman Park

Sixty orienteers braved the heat to complete shortened courses at the Mosman Park MetrO. After reaching a maximum of 41 degrees earlier in the day temperatures cooled down just enough to be pleasant for 20% shortened courses. Competitors who made the climb up some of the steep hills on the map were rewarded with great views of the river, ocean, and surrounding suburbs.

Tomato Lake, Kewdale

With 89 participants, the Kewdale MetrO had the largest turnout so far this season. Although the weather was hot during the day, it cooled down just in time for the competitors to enjoy the shorter than average courses that involved a lot of route choice.

Hillarys Park, Lymburner Dr

Lots of twisting roads to untangle in Hillarys at this weekend's MetrO: and not just horizontal directions to consider! Weather looks fantastic however, with a top of just 29°C forecast. Would still be great for a dip in the ocean before or after your run if you are so inclined.

Entries are now open in Eventor. Pre-entry closes Saturday 20th January at 4pm. You will also be able to enter at the event.

Meller Park, 2 Hope Road

Minim Cove Park, Mosman Park

The map for this MetrO event covers a large area of parks and suburban streets. A few steep hills in the area will provide interesting route choice as well as great views of the ocean, river, and surrounding suburbs. The assembly area is under the trees in the grassed area west of Russell Brown Adventure Park next to the public toilets.

Hot Weather Forecast (updated 13/1): With reference to the OWA Extreme Heat policy, this event will currently go ahead with

King's Park - it was monumental!

Sunday December 17th dawned clear and sunny, with no sign of the forecast possible showers and, until well after 8am, no sign of anyone arriving for the picnic game. After resolving differences in the interpretation of "South side" and overcoming assumptions about what would provide the promised shade, about 60 eager members found their way to where Santa (aka the event planner) was waiting in his personal COVID quarantine zone.

Tomato Lake, Kewdale

The next MetrO event will be held at Tomato Lake in Kewdale. Entries are open in Eventor. Pre-entry closes Saturday 6th January at 4pm. You will also be able to enter at the event.

George Burnett Park, Karawara

Around 65 orienteers turned up to enjoy the Karawara MetrO on a warm afternoon. Plenty of parkland and route choice was available.

Feedback was that the event was enjoyable with nice parks although the repeating patterns of the linear parks could make navigation tricky (not to mention 2 very similar underpasses).

Friday 19th - Monday 22nd January

Ern Halliday Recreation Camp, Hillarys

Entries close this Saturday Dec 23rd!!!

OWA is organising a summer orienteering camp with accommodation at Ern Halliday Recreation Camp, Hillarys. A team of OWA coaches will lead activities on site and nearby sprint ‘O’ maps for three days and three nights towards the end of the January School holidays.

Lake Monger

Event 5 of the MetrO series at Lake Monger MetrO was a resounding success, with participants enjoying the wonderful clear weather despite the brisk winds. The course, which circled the picturesque lake, offered a challenging yet enjoyable experience for competitors. Although the route was slightly long, the feedback suggested that participants relished the opportunity to navigate the beautiful surroundings.

Churchlands

The pleasant weather may have increased competitor numbers or perhaps it was the orienteers who visited a few proximal ParkRun events earlier in the day to advertise the event. Of the 68 competitors, several were new-comers, some individuals, others in groups. It was great to have a new-comer take home a prize.
