A mention of an orienteering event in ‘John Forrest’ probably conjured up a slightly different picture for some of us, compared to how it really was. A challenging Bush O event so early in the season. With 90 entrants and a final number of 82 participants on the day (with a good sprinkling of casuals), it was a great day out in the bush. Nice moderate temperatures and clear skies.

Thirty riders and one runner joined the Mother’s Day throng at Langford Park in Jarrahdale for the first bush MTBO event of the season and scored a beautiful fine autumn day for their outing.

Sunday 1st - Monday 2nd June
The WA Classic is a standard bush event on two consequtive days on the June Long Weekend. Awards are made for first male and first female on each course, based on cumulative time over the two days. It is a great opportunity to get out of the city for a two-day event, camp on the Sunday night, enjoy the evening with your orienteering friends and compete again on the Monday morning.

This early season bush event will be held at the small but hilly Settler’s Common on a recently updated and expanded map. It offers a great opportunity for newcomes to try out some bush courses closer to the city, and for seasoned orienteers to get back into the bush. The courses are suitable for all levels of fitness and experience - instructors will be on hand to help you get started!

This event, at John Forrest National Park, promises to be a fantastic day out for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels. This time, the event will be centred around the Swan View Railway Heritage Trail Hub, located on the western side of the park—a spot rich in both natural beauty and historical significance. Cone-trol Mayhem Melts Minds in Thornlie! 


On Sunday, April 6, Thornlie and its unsuspecting neighbouring ‘hoods—Canning River, Huntingdale, Gosnells and Langford—were swarmed by saddle-strapped navigators for the Thornlie MTBO (Mountain Bike Orienteering, or - as some now call it - Maprun, Trails, Bikes & Oops).

Langford Park is a former bauxite mine, now rehabilitated, and offering walk and MTB trail networks. This event uses the Langford Park map updated for last year’s Middle Distance Championships, and returns to the more traditional MTBO format of paper map and SI timing.

This event on a new park and bush map at Mills Park in Beckenham provided a good opportunity for those travelling to Easter to get into some interesting bush features in a compact area. Courses started in the park area then traversed many features in the bush ("swamps", watercourses, ditches, depressions, tree stumps, etc) before heading into more sprint-worthy park terrain to finish.

A very fine and breezy morning in Swanbourne for the first bike orienteering of the season: 2h to collect a maximum of 60 controls.

North Lake Senior Campus was first used in 2023, and only a few gardens beds have changed. The map was updated in March. The terrain is typical of high school campuses. Both the long and short courses have a map flip. There will be no water supplied on courses or at the start, you need to bring your own. Scale is 1:2000 with 2.5m contours.

For the first time in 20 years, Perth hosted a round of the National Orienteering League (NOL). This consisted of four events run over 2 days. Congratulations to all our Nomads who competed on home ground, and all the volunteers involved in putting together these events.

This year's second Mountain Bike Orienteering (MTBO) event is set around Thornlie and Huntingdale. The freshly updated map includes urban areas, parklands and paths along the Canning River. This event is suitable for all types of bikes (including e-bikes) and all levels of experience, as well as runners.

The first Mountain Bike Orienteering (MTBO) event of the season will be at Lake Clarkemont Parklands. This is an urban area with quiet and busy streets, along with parklands. This is a scatter event, where you can collect as many (or as few) controls as you like at your own pace within the 2-hour limit. Bring your bike and give it a go!
