Continuing with what is now tradition - the MTBO season pushing into October - we finally got to have the WA MTBO Long Champs. With the bridge repaired and the river crossing not flooded, riders finally got to enjoy Murray Valley South on a new map made by Duncan Sullivan. Lots of fast purpose-built mountain bike trails and one-way systems all made for a good long distance with plenty of route choice.

Mt Elphinstone
On the Saturday afternoon twenty five people, including fifteen from Perth, took part in the event at Mt Elphinstone set by Tony Whittaker. The courses were carefully designed so that it was possible to avoid the darkest green parts of the map if you utilised the tracks. It was a small, interesting map which included cliffs, large rock surfaces, some climbs, thick vegetation and a network of tracks, some of them rather vague. A map flip...

Over 100 competitors made it out to the WA Long Distance Championships at Malmalling East. Apart from those misled by signs that were turned around by ‘pranksters’ on motor bikes, most competitors reached the start on time. The terrain was less rough and rocky than experienced in recent events and winning times indicated that the courses were age appropriate, although the range of times suggested that they still provided quite a few people with challenges.

The University of Western Australia
Changes to terrain at universities seem to be unpredictable but fortunately the music event in the pre-start area was over by noon, and the temporary fencing surrounding a control on course 1 was dismantled enough in time to allow access and exit along mapped routes. We had been warned about a wedding which may be why car parking was less easy than expected.

A limited number of Enter on the Day courses will be available. While the map was first produced many years ago, the area used for these championships has not been used in over a decade. Participants whose primary interest is not competing are likely to find beautiful wildflowers to distract them.

Swan Valley
No jumbucks were spotted, but we did see kangaroos, emus, echidnas, goats and trail runners. Those orienteers carefully guiding their feet over the rocky ground may have spotted some blue leschenaultias and fringed lilies. The ridge also provided expansive views up the lower Avon Valley
and across the coastal plain and encroaching suburbia.

In spite of the University authorities’ stringent requirements and exclusion of a large part of the previous map, suitable terrain remained for adequate courses, set by Ken Brownlie under assiduous control by Anthea Feaver.
Nearly 125 people took part including 16 who ran more than one course; a couple of enthusiastic youngsters, and elders, doing all four.

Whiteman Park
It was a dark and stormy night before the Primary School Championships on 17 August 2022. On the morning of the event, two schools decided not to attend because of the predicted severe weather. The event Organisers had an early morning consultation with BOM Perth and decided to continue with the event. Thankfully, apart from one deluge of rain during setup the rain held off until after the end of the event. Eighty-five students from 10 schools participated. Thirty-one volunteers
