East of The Lakes

This is the second State Orienteering League (SOL) event for 2022 (the first was at Wundabiniring on 22nd May). The terrain used for the courses is varied and includes open forest, some patches of thick vegetation, steeper hillsides with rock detail, and open fast-running areas.

Sunday 5th - Monday 6th June

Dale, near Beverley

The WA Classic for 2022 took place over two days on the Hill Park Dale map near Beverley. The hilly farmland map includes lots of rock detail as well as some open land, and provided opportunities for spotting kangaroos and newborn lambs.

Dwellingup Trails and Visitor Centre

A cool but fine day greeted the 35 starters in the bike classes and 5 runners for this 3-hour score event at the fantastic new trail centre in Dwellingup. Competitors were challenged with a double sided A3 map. It would have been almost impossible to clear the course so decisions which side to start on needed to be made quickly.

East of The Lakes

Seventy one people enjoyed the first SOL (State O League) event of the season. The Wundabiniring area has subtle features, but fantastic runability, allowing this event to be fast and furious. The weather was warm, and fortunately the rain held off until all the controls had been collected.

Glen Forrest

Our next MTBO event will be located in the area between Glen Forrest and Mahogany Creek, using sections of the Heritage Trail. The Medium and Long courses use the extensive bush reserves south of the Heritage Trail.

This event is suited to beginners, families, and runners. E-bikes welcome. The Glen Forrest Gourmet Café on Railway Parade is open from 8:00 am to 3:00pm and is highly recommended for drinks, cakes and lunches.

East of Mundaring & Sawyers Valley

A number of families as well as a two week old baby were included in the 103 participants who enjoyed the sunshine at Yetar Spring on Mothers’ Day.

Although the trail-bike rider tracks had been updated in the northwest of the map, numerous unmapped tracks elsewhere may have caused confusion for some. Those who went to the most north-easterly part of the map were recognisable by their blackened appearance having traversed an area that had been burnt a year or

Dwellingup Trails and Visitor Centre

In this MTBO score event, you will have 3 hours to visit as many controls as you like on WA's largest orienteering map.

From the visitor centre in Dwellingup, you can either go out for the full 3 hours, or come back for a recharge and enjoy the cafe! There will be lots of controls within a 3km radius of the start, so the event is well suited to beginners, families, and even walkers/runners (enter runner class). E-bikes welcome - enter the E-Bike class!

Mt Observation

A wet preceding week softened the ground and delayed DBCA’s plans to burn the northern end of Mt Observation, which allowed 94 people the opportunity to explore one of our less frequented maps. Originally mapped in the early 1990s, and last used in 2013, the map has held up surprisingly well – some of it was burnt last year which kept the undergrowth in check, the rock mapping is still quite credible, and the trail bikers haven’t discovered it. DBCA have even put in a toilet,

East of The Lakes

Expect fast forest running for this middle distance State Orienteering League (SOL) event with the longer courses venturing to the northern part of the map, an area that has not been used for some years.

The State Orienteering League (SOL) is a series of orienteering events running throughout the season which is designed to permit comparison of performance within and between orienteers of different age classes to determine the annual orienteer of the year. If you would like

Overall SWOT wishes to thank everyone that attended (an pre-entered!), especially those who traveled from Mandurah and Perth to support our events. We all know the hard work it takes to set up and run the events but it makes it all worthwhile when people come and enjoy the courses - so thank you!

East of Mundaring & Sawyers Valley

Orienteering returns to Yetar Spring, a map that we haven't been allowed to use for several years. The map now looks a bit different: the pine trees have gone and trail bike riders have added lots of extra tracks. However, it still provides very pleasant running in parts, and some complex areas to navigate through. Vegetation in the eastern part of the map has been thinned dramatically by a bush fire in 2021, but this part remains as steep and rocky as ever.

Orienteering returns to Mt Observation, a map that we haven't used for several years. Expect rocks, grass trees and more.

This event is one of the Junior State Team 2022 selection events.

Manning Park, Spearwood

Manning Park presents some interesting options for the setter as it is not quite a bush event and bit more than a metro or sprint event. The flat area around the lake made for convenient courses for the E and VE and the abundant tracks on the hillsides and ridge made for choices for the harder courses. Control placement tended to be on the easier side of things on track junctions and other more distinct features. Courses where possible were designed to provide different

John Okey Davis Park, Gosnells

Congratulations to all who took part in the MapRun6 event! We had over 50 riders (and we ran out of maps).
Congratulations to Hadrien Devillepoix who came in with the fastest time and visited all controls.
A big thank you goes to the setter, Robert Pullella. Special thanks to Jack and Sue Dowling for helping out with event planning and organisation on the day - greatly appreciated.
