The Middle Distance State O League (SOL) event at Malmalling South West drew an enthusiastic field, with 50 pre-entries and a total of 76 participants. After several days of rain across Perth, competitors were fortunate to enjoy dry conditions throughout the event.
All clubs were represented, with strong numbers from Bibbulmun Orienteers (13), Kulgun 225 Orienteers (16), LOST (18), Orienteering WA (2), South-West Orienteering Trekkers (3), Wullundigong Orienteers of the West (12), and 12 casual entrants, including several newcomers trying orienteering for the first time.
Despite the shorter course lengths and elevation gains, competitors found the terrain and thick bush technically demanding. Navigation challenges were spread across the course, with no single control causing widespread difficulty, as seen in the splits.
Many young families enjoyed the Easy and Very Easy courses. Several competitors returned for a second course, and at times a third course.
This event was set by first-time WA course setters David Messenger and Christine Brown, who dedicated many hours to fieldwork and course design as they had never previously competed on this area of the map. Special thanks to Carol Brownlie, who expertly guided them through the State Orienteering League process and provided valuable course setting experience and advice as Controller, and to Ken Brownlie for assistance to Carol and assistance with start-area setup and pack-down.
Appreciation also goes to Rosalie McCauley for her work as Organiser, supported by Melinda in the caravan with the results team, and to the control collectors: Russell Wade, Ken and Helen Post, Dan Grieg, David and Rosalie McCauley, and Brian Austin.
Final thanks to Jack and Sue Dowling for towing the caravan, and Ken and Helen Post for transporting the portable toilet.
