On a beautiful autumn day 36 riders and runners gathered at Troy Park, Attadale, each eager to shake off the cobwebs with a solid start to the season. It was special to meet up with Cass and Shane from Newcastle, on holiday in WA. A few had problems getting MapRun to behave for them (and, unhappily, didn’t get their results recorded) but it was an otherwise smooth start.
Some chose to enjoy a pleasant ride gathering controls close to the river while others ventured up and down the ridges scattered between Bicton and the Canning River. For those remaining at base, coffee and cake enticed the local magpie family which eventually retreated to a tree just above Jack – thanks for taking one for the team, Jack.
Ricky was the first rider back, in a time of 1 hr 9 mins, with Hadrien hard on his heels, 31 seconds behind. The first women riders to finish were Veronika on 1hr 36 mins and Liisa just a few minutes behind her. Joseph, Kate and Anastasia were awesome on foot and Duncan should also be given a special mention – he managed initially to finagle 2 more points than the maximum 54, thereby assuming first place?! Everyone seemed to enjoy the morning and we were pleased to see people lingering to discuss the course and catch up with each other. Our heartfelt thanks go to Ricky for his mapwork and advice, to Jack for all the MapRun setup, to Heike for coming early to help newcomers and to Sue, Pam and Debbie for the goodies.
