A mention of an orienteering event in ‘John Forrest’ probably conjured up a slightly different picture for some of us, compared to how it really was. A challenging Bush O event so early in the season. With 90 entrants and a final number of 82 participants on the day (with a good sprinkling of casuals), it was a great day out in the bush. Nice moderate temperatures and clear skies.

However, the terrain was rather hilly (to say the least) and the vegetation was fairly dense in places where it wasn’t always expected, resulting in a number of scratched limbs. Liam unfortunately came a cropper near control 13 and decided to stick with the Hard Long course. Craig blitzed the Hard Combined course in under 9km distance, and inside 1hr 15 minutes (truly awe inspiring to the likes of me), with Hadrien only 3½ minutes behind. The last person whom I saw out in the bush at 1.20pm (!) was Nick, still trying to punch controls that I was busy collecting (who let him out at that time ?).

A big thank you to the setters Kate and Lachlan, and course controller Graham. And thanks to the control collectors who got another go at climbing up some of the steeper hills – not sure who were out there, but Sten, Joseph, Graham, Rohan, Kate, Ceri and Lachlan all helped. Thanks Melinda for managing the registration and timekeeping, David for towing the Portaloo out and Rob, Sue and Carol for taking photos.
