The second double-header weekend this season saw two WA state championship races: a spint on Saturday at Murdoch University, and middle distance on Sunday at Hill Park Dale map in Westdale near Beverley.

72 competitors attended the Sprint Champs at Murdoch University, which was held in delightful, warm sunny conditions.

The main feature of the map updated by Ekaterina Kliukina and Sten Claessens, is the new building 360 Boola Katitjin, which means “place of learning”. There were many minor works taking place, two of which happened recently, and Lois West made last minute OOB additions to Courses 1-3.

The start triangle was at an intersection of 5 paths and those runners who did not orientate their map to north had issues. It was hard to design the courses for the right length to obtain the 12-15 minute winning times, so it was pleasing to see that Jiri Vales ran Course 1 in 14:35 and on Course 2 Kate Braid finished in 13:12. Archie Brownlie did 11:22 on Course 3, suggesting that could have been slightly longer in length. Tony Simpkins ran Course 4 in 14:25 and Ruth Toomey finished Course 5 in 12:27. The fastest finish split was shared by Liam Dufty and Joseph Coleman with a time of 8.0 seconds.

The two State Sprint Champions are Kate Braid and Joseph Coleman. In W21A, Kate Braid was first, Veronika Kubinova second and Zali Dale was third. In M21A, Jiri Vales was first, Joseph Coleman came in second and Oliver Martin was third.

Many thanks to Paul Dowling, Rob Beattie, Lois West and Mike Sibbald for assisting with the setting up. The control collectors did a fabulous job; they were Paul Dowling, Michael Dufty, Sharon McFarlane, Riley McFarlane and Mike Sibbald. Packing up help was provided by Lily McFarlane and the Dufty family. Admin and results work was ably undertaken by Melinda Richards and Rosalie McCauley.

Also thanks to: Setter - Rob West, Controller - Dan Greig, Organiser - Sue Dowling, First Aid and Assistant Setter - Lily McFarlane and back up First Aider Liisa Hirvonen.
