The Secondary Schools champs were held in pleasant weather at Fred Jacoby Park on Wednesday 16th. Participants and their teachers seemed to enjoy the day and the courses, appropriate for the age and experience of the competitors, set by Ian Fletcher. Pleasingly, 13 of the 15 schools attending the event had participants on the podium. The winning school was All Saints, edging out the previous (2019) winner, La Salle, by 4 points, with Shenton College’s small, but experienced team coming in third. All results can be found here >>
As with all events of this nature, their success was ensured by a large, wonderful team of current and past OWA members volunteering in many and varied roles: Peter Gillon, Luan & Andries Swart, Veronika Vavrova, Sarah Richards, Andrea Eves, Mick Minchin, Anne and Brian Austin, Jennifer Binns, Penny & Phil Dufty, Rob & Lois West, Nick Dale, Phil Taylor, Jenny Komyshan, Susan Coleman, Jacqui McManus, Sue Dowling, Ken & Carol Brownlie, Anna Napier, Jan Candy, Pam Yeatman and Ian Fletcher. This group were responsible for bringing the equipment, setting out and checking controls, keeping participants safe and running the starts and finish operations. They were ably supported by the McTeam group of Rosalie McCauley, Melinda Richards and Jack Dowling who handled the IT side of things.
Sincere thanks are also due to Schools Sports WA for help with promotion of the event; to the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions for allowing access to the map area and for facilitating the event; and to Healthway, the event sponsor.
