Easter Carnival 2019 Wrap Up

Easter3daypodiumenewsOver the Easter and Anzac Day holidays Orienteering WA hosted the Easter Carnival 2019. This featured 7 events over just 9 days and with such a wide variety of courses over a diverse set of terrains, there was something for everybody. The many visiting Orienteers from around Australia and overseas also enjoyed seeing the sights of Perth and WA.

Events included the Go for 2 &5 Australia 3 Day Championships, the Go for 2 &5 Australian Sprint Championships and the Go for 2 &5 Australian Middle Distance Championships. Plus, there was also a Go for 2 &5Sprint Relay Day and a score event at the lovely Dryanda Woodlands, hosted by Bunbury club SWOT.

In the Mixed Elite, at the University of Western Australia Campus, teams of 2 men and 2 women raced for state glory with the Victorians Aislinn Prendergast, Bruce Arthur, Patrick Jaffe and Natasha Key taking the Senior race. The 20E race was taken out by the Canberra Cockatoos represented by Zoe Melhuish, Noah Poland, Patrick Miller and Tara Melhuish.

Congrats to Bruce Arthur who was in the winning Senior Elite Relay team and then backed up to win the Family Relay with his sons Mason and Torren , ahead of Matthew, David and Chris Stocks with Ethan Penck, Steve Cooper and Ana Penck in third. The Handicap Family Teams was won by Stephen, Martina and Rebecca Craig from Newcastle with Adrian Uppill, Robin Uppill and Bridget Anderson from South Australia in 2nd Place. The Bruce, Mason and Torren Arthur trio from Victoria took third spot in the handicap race.

In the Go for 2&5 Australian 3 Day Championships, only four orienteers managed to maintain their winning form over each of the three days. Rachel West (W40), Helen Alexander (W80), Bruce Arthur (M45) and Stephen Craig (M50) kept up their consistency over the three days of orienteering. In the Elite Classes, the overall winners for each class were Patrick Miller (M20E), Henry McNulty (M21E), Mikayla Cooper (W20E) and Natasha Key (W21E).

In Narrogin Henry McNulty (M21E) and Natasha Key (W21E) took Go for 2&5 Australian Sprint Championships at the Narrogin Seniore High School Campus (some bush added for extra enjoyment) while the next day at the nearby Foxes Lair reserve on the edge of the town Krystal Neumann (W21E) and Matt Doyle (M21E) were victorious in the Go for 2&5 Australian Middle Distance Orienteering Championships.

Well done to everyone who took part and achieved their own goals.
