Event report: Club relays

The OWA Club Relays are the most sociable event of the year as shown by frequent cheers for incoming team members who showed impressive and valiant efforts alike.

Kent St Senior High School is familiar to many of us as a mainly rectangular grid, orientated 45 degrees off NS, sloping up to the NE, particularly at the start, with porches and canopies providing crafty control sites which were well exploited.

Some hard grade course sections included upper building levels which confused a few, as did the (legal) proximity of 60 controls on a small map. That may have explained why 3 people mis-punched, but one took the wrong map after misreading his team bib number looking down on it from above.

Nevertheless 72 members forming 32 teams represented our five clubs, with results on Eventor showing winning times in each class were within or very close to Sprint expectations.

Kulgun Orienteers were the clear Club winners on points, well ahead of WOW and Bibbulmun Orienteers which were close. While LOST must have been tired by being the organising club, it was good to see two ADHOC teams. Those results, with individual times and teams’ progress are shown on Eventor and reveal some surprises.

Thanks to all the LOST members and others who helped by setting up, packing up, and collecting controls - Anthea Feaver, Peter Standen, Richard Matthews, Nicole Davis, Jan and Ian Fletcher, Rosemary Kullmann, Tony Simpkins, Jennifer Binns, Edward Plummer, Chas Lane, Mike Howe, and Carol Brownlie. A big thankyou goes to Melinda who did all the computing and had detailed results on line within 30 minutes.

The meticulous and enthusiastic Course Planner was Nick Dale and the scrupulous hard working Event Organiser was Helen Bailey, who both allowed Controller Ken Brownlie mostly to sit back and just watch them do the work.
