Summer Sprint 3
"tRicky here reporting on the Perry Lakes event that I planned, lovingly crafted, and then somewhat failed to attend. I drew the map, set the courses, admired my own handiwork work… and then work! got in the way of actually putting out the controls. One minor detail.
Luckily, my lovely, charming, and suspiciously patient wife stepped in. With zero complaints, she placed the controls, and set up the start and finish while I was otherwise occupied with my employment. The event ran smoothly and by all accounts, competitors absolutely loved the tRicky courses. Technical, fun, and just mischievous enough to keep everyone honest. There were some mis-punches due to the tRicky placing of controls, which is my usual MO and I hear it on good authority that my wife warned competitors at the start to check their control descriptions.
There was, however, one slightly misplaced control. One. On such a tRicky course, this is entirely understandable. Thankfully, Rachel West discovered it mid-course and calmly fixed it, preventing any lasting confusion. Some runners (allegedly) didn’t even notice, which was a true testament to how engaging the courses were.
So good were the courses that many competitors came back for seconds, with a large group even running the short course again in an informal mass start. Chaos, laughter, and excellent navigation ensued.
The event also marked the final results of the Metro Series, with fantastic prizes generously supplied by BIX Vitamins. Congratulations to all our well-deserving series winners, listed below.
A big thank you to our setters for this season. Thanks to Mark Lommers, our charismatic MC and prize giver. Rachel West, Craig Dufty and the rest of the West/Dufty clan for the free Kid-O which was hugely popular (especially for the larger kids), Melinda on the computers, our first timers Nhi Do and mum who also helped set up the registration, and our control collectors Paul and Jack Dowling, Chris Drury, Carolyn Read, Joseph Coleman, Kate and Ceri Braid, and Susan and Matt Coleman for packup.
I must finish this article with my heartfelt thank you to my wife who is my whole world, and who also cooked dinner when we got home. I could not do without her and I clearly owe her a special date, probably an MTBO (Mountain Bike Orienteering) picnic and ice cream on 15 March 2026 in Attadale. Romance, but with maps, she will love that!"
