The WA Classic event was held at Frazzle in the June long weekend. We were lucky with the weather. Despite threats of rain and wind the expected downpours held off till after both events were completed, awards presented, and controls collected.
The landowners were extremely happy to have us as usual, but we were not able to access the Frazzle property to the north east as the landowner was hosting a personal event on the WA Weekend. He was disappointed that he could not have us as guests this year.
Being a two-day event, it required collaboration between the setters (Anthea Feaver and Peter Standen, Day 1, and Robert Boekelaar, Day 2) and this was capably achieved, including sharing some control sites.
It was good to see a sizeable contingent of ADHOC orienteers at the events.
Day 1
Fortunately the fog started clearing at midday and so in the afternoon 76 competitors were able to enjoy the rocks, rock surfaces and more rocks at Frazzle. Being the first day of the two day WA Classic, there was much interest in the close results of Day 1, with the leaders being:
H1 - Liam Dufty and Kate Braid, H2 - Matt Seward and Rachel West, H3 - John Toomey and Sarah Richards, H4 - Noel Schoknecht and Carol Brownlie, H5 - Oliver Martin and Sharon McFarlane, M - John Major and Ruth Toomey, E - Fraser Brownlie and Sheridan Ellery, and VE - Christine Brown.
A big group of campers set up at the Assembly Area, and a good time was had around the campfire.
A big thank you goes to the setters, Anthea Feaver and Peter Standen. Many thanks to all the LOST members who helped with the event. Helen Bailey was the Organiser, Richard Matthews, Nicole Davis, Mike Howe, and John and Janine Taylor helped with setting up, while Mike also did instruction. Noel Schoknecht, Richard Matthews, Mark and Quinn Lommers, and John Taylor collected controls. Special thanks to Tracy and Paul Burns who towed the caravan, despite not entering the event. The xShort (extra short course) was a bonus, and was enjoyed by those who took part, some doing it as a second course after their first run.
Day 2
At the finish, there were some active discussions about legs and strategies, and Robert Boekelaar (the setter) was assured by some completing runners that everything was fine – they were very happy with the courses and it was all positive and complimentary.
Many thanks are due to setter Robert, ably assisted by Ken Post and Russell Wade, who taped the control sites. Thanks also to Ken and Russell, plus Helen Post and Gina Wade, who helped Robert put out the controls. Thanks too, to the control collectors. Special thanks are due to Helen who was the very efficient organiser for the event.
