The final sprint event in the Summer Sprint Series saw a return to Gosnells Pioneer Park and Civic Centre with 80 participants enjoying a pleasant evening run in mild conditions around the parklands and bush areas. Series prizes were awarded after the event as a culmination of the (brief) series with best two of three events counting towards the total.

The map has been updated to (hopefully) conform to the latest mapping standards although the multi-level boardwalk still caused some confusion amongst participants. Courses seemed to be enjoyed by all with route choices on most legs and the controls all remained in place in their very public locations (with some help from our store of cables and locks).

Congratulations to the winners: Liam and Kate on the long; Anthea and Duncan on the short; and several newcomers and groups having a first go on the easy.

Thank you to our state team members from the WA Nomads for control collecting, followed by a discussion on the future of the Metro Series, and also to Tash for helping put out controls. Thanks to Ricky for setting and doing the map updates.

Results can be found in Eventor, along with routes in Livelox.

Series Report - 2024-25 Summer Sprint Series

The 2024-25 Summer Series Sprints made an exciting debut as a new addition to the Orienteering WA summer calendar. Organised by members of the Western Nomads team, the series featured three fast-paced sprint races held alongside our regular MetrO season. The format provided a fresh challenge for regular participants and a fantastic introduction to orienteering newcomers.

Competitors navigated a mix of complex urban and park environments, testing their speed and decision-making under pressure. It was fantastic to see strong participation, particularly in the more technically demanding courses!

Overall Series Winners:
Long Senior – Ceri Pass (176) & Ricky Thackray (200)
Long Junior – Kate Braid (190) & Joseph Coleman (197)
Short Senior – Susan Coleman (180) & Duncan Sullivan (199)
Short Junior – Neve Lommers (199) & Max Li (184)
Easy – Sue Dowling (195)

Congratulations to all participants! If any series winners have yet to receive their prize, please contact Orienteering WA, and we’ll arrange for collection at the next available event. And special thanks to our event setters, Sten, Ekaterina, and Ricky, for designing such enjoyable and challenging courses.

Given the success and enthusiasm for the sprint format, we hope to make the Summer Series Sprints a regular feature of our summer programme in the future.

Overall series results can be found Eventor.

Good luck to all at the upcoming National Orienteering League round in WA!
