• Camp Quaranup, Albany

24-27 January 2025

The camp at Camp Quaranup was attended by 13 juniors from Friday to Monday over the long weekend. Though we had lower numbers due to several families travelling, it gave us all time to meet the new faces, who fitted in easily, adding to the sense of a community with similar interests. In the little spare time, juniors were playing cars, chatting, playing ball games or exploring the Camp area.

Thanks to the many helpers at the camp. In order of initial appearance; Rob (supported by Lois throughout) was camp director assisting Rachel (absent) in organisation, bus driving, the getting to know you activity, the warm up Orienteering activity and the Night O and inspiring everyone for their morning run. Kate (Ekaterina) who ran the indoor activity the first night which had everyone engaged with various puzzles. She also set the training events on Sunday at North Albany High School - part of this was the juniors reading a map, doing some exercise then trying to remember the control location. Several juniors noticed their brain fade. John (Toomey) ran a running skills session, similar to the one he did two years ago at the last camp in Albany. Though only 60 minutes, it had us out of breath and mentally challenged. Ruth adeptly helped with the demonstrations to support John who was recovering from surgery.

After John's activity and morning tea, Sarah ran a simple, but challenging navigation exercise in pairs. One person putting out a tape, the other retrieving. Juniors could choose to do this as map memory or with a map. As usual, most juniors challenged themselves. After Sarah's activity we drove to Denmark via Cosy Corner for lunch and to compete in John's ADHOC event (which was again supported by several others). Legs were certainly tired round these complicated courses set on an interesting area.

2025 Summer Camp Stens Forts Session Rohan & RubenSten ran two enjoyable activities on Sunday morning around the Forts area in Albany with juniors working in pairs or teams. The map was detailed enough to be used at 1:2000. The few tourists present were typically surprised or confused at our activity.

Albany gave us the full range of weather. Friday, while driving down, the car told me it was 44 in Kojonup. We were all ready for a swim! The next two days were much cooler, often with drizzle. The facilities were perfect again. Good quality and copious food to suit all.

Thanks to all who made the camp happen, and most importantly who attended. Those who didn't make it, you were missed.
