NavRuns are designed to provide accessible, enjoyable navigation experiences for newcomers and experienced orienteers alike. Courses focus on route choices along linear features such as tracks, in bush and parkland environments, with cross-country options where vegetation allows.
NavRuns are particularly valuable for participants developing their skills beyond urban settings and into forest terrain. Terrain will vary between locations, but courses are designed so that people feel comfortable building new skills while being challenged to think and problem-solve.
Registration and Event starts times
Usually Sunday NavRun events are held at the following times:
Registration: 8:30 am to 10:00 am
Starts: from 9:00 am to 10:30 am
Courses close: 11:30 am – you must return to the assembly area by this time, whether or not you complete the course.
Pre-entry is encouraged but not required. NavRun Event Fees are the same as standard events, listed at Event Fees. If you are not member of OWA but want to pre-enter, see instructions for How to register an Eventor account.
Get ready and learn more
Here is an example map and course you might receive at an event. Start is marked with a purple triangle, the control points with purple circles, and there is a legend to help you decode the rest of the symbols.
For NavRun courses, you need to collect the controls in order; from start go to control #1, then #2 etc... until you get to the finish marked with a double circle. Try planning the route you would take for the course. You can use the tracks, or take shortcuts through open land and forest, but anything marked "out of bounds" must not be entered (e.g. purple areas - check the legend carefully!).
Generally, instructors are available at each event to help you get started on the right course for your level of ability and fitness, and answer any questions you might have.
