The Bickley Brook Anytime Orienteering area is on the Darling Scarp alongside Bickley Brook Reservoir, 25km from Perth, and abutting the Bickley Outdoor Recreation Camp. The only approach is along Hardinge Road. Parking and picnic and toilet facilities are available at Hardinge Park.
Map notes
Out-of-Bounds areas:
There are several areas clearly shown on the map to be out of bounds including the lake (black outline on blue) and the dam wall and works area (purple hatching). These must be avoided. The Outdoor Recreation Camp is also out of bounds unless you are part of a group booked into the camp and have the permission of management.
Vegetation:
Heath and bush vegetation on the hills is mostly very thick. Straight-line navigation is rarely possible, so expect to travel further than the straight-line distances listed, especially on the long course. Most controls require short excursions from tracks.
Courses
There are 3 standard line courses available.
Short: 1.1km
Medium: 1.8km
Long: 2.8km
There is also a scatter course that has all 20 controls used for the line courses.
The area is sufficiently rugged that it is not feasible to offer a “starter” course. However, controls 125 and 126 (the first two on the short course) give an introduction to the terrain and the style of control descriptions and markers.
The start and finish of all the courses is located on the NE side of the parking and picnic area, at a shelter. The start is marked on the map by a triangle, the finish by a double circle. In this instance they overlap.
Other starts could be used and anyone can design their own course using the full set of controls on the “all controls” scatter course map.
The safety bearing on all courses is north to a boundary road or track.
Control Markers
All the control markers in the Bickley Brook map area are attached to trees above head height and close to the designated control feature and in the direction (e.g. “side of”) given in the control descriptions. Where control markers have been attached to trees that are more than 5m from the control feature, the distance from the feature is given in brackets following the control description, e.g. N side of cliff, 1.2m high [8m] indicates that the control marker is attached to a tree 8 metres to the north of a 1.2m cliff.
Each control marker is a 15cm square plate showing the number listed in the control descriptions and a 2-letter code. See photo on the right.
When you reach a control, write the letters in the numbered boxes on the map to show that you have visited the correct control.
A list of the Control Letter Codes, to check whether you have completed the course correctly, can be downloaded.
Organisational and Safety Guidelines can also be downloaded.
