Sport Safe Policy
The Orienteering Association of Western Australia Inc. ( )acknowledges the benefits and importance of safety in sport and has compiled a Sport Safety Plan. The Plan encompasses Policies, Orienteering Australia’s Rules of Orienteering, Technical Manual, Public Liability Insurance, Development Officer, People, and Property.

Rules of Orienteering – Health & Safety Guidelines
All Orienteering events are subject to the Orienteering Australia (OA) Competition Rules, and will follow the Health and Safety Guidelines specified within the OA Competition Rules. These include guidelines on general hygiene, infectious diseases, drinking water and sharing of drink containers, first aid, and search and rescue procedures. has also developed its own guidelines on search and rescue procedures (refer to Technical pages on web site).
may from time to time, and according to OA Competition Rules, make it a requirement for all participants at a specific event that full body cover clothing should be worn, and/or that a whistle should be carried.
At all other events, recommends the following safety measures to all its members and all participants in Orienteering events and activities organised by :

Suitable clothing, including protective items (eg. gaiters) and appropriate footwear should be worn. The use of sunscreen and hats is encouraged through our SunSmart Policy.

Carry a whistle and know when and how to use it.

Although water will be provided on courses, participants are advised to be well hydrated before setting out, and are also advised to carry their own water.

Adopt both a warm up and cool down routine.

Public Liability Insurance
will maintain public liability and professional indemnity insurance.
Development Officer
The Development Officer (and a number of paid Assistants) conducts a range of Orienteering activities, including sessions in schools and various other locations.
Within schools, the Development Officer and/or Assistants will ensure that the school’s and ’s safety policies are complied with.
At other locations, the Development Officer and/or Assistants will also ensure the safety of participants through safe course setting principals and the placement of Course Marshalls where appropriate. The Development Officer and/or Assistants will also have a First Aid kit available at every off-school activity.
People
provides continuing education and training for its members, so they can enjoy safe participation.

Coaches are actively encouraged to gain and maintain accreditation.

Trained sport first aiders are present at all events.

Emergency contact numbers, for hospitals, and rescue services, are provided for all event locations.

Property
recognises the need to provide adequate support facilities and the following safety issues are addressed.

Suitable first aid equipment is provided and maintained.

Disposable surgical rubber or plastic gloves are provided for first aid, and for handling competitors’ equipment, such as maps and control cards.

All equipment is checked annually and a system for continuing maintenance is in place. Instructions for the safe use of equipment are prominently displayed, and are included in the Event Planning Manual.
